š DEVOTIONAL:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." - Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
In the quiet corners of the creative mind, there often echoes the subtle but persistent desire for affirmation, approval, and applause. The people-pleasing artist, like a skilled performer, crafts their art not solely as an expression of personal creativity but as a seeking gaze for the applause of others.
It's understandableāthe longing for recognition and acceptance is a deeply human experience. Yet, for the creative soul, this pursuit can subtly morph into a form of bondage. The canvas becomes a mirror reflecting the expectations of the audience rather than a portal for authentic worship.
To unbecome a people-pleasing artist, we must first recognize the subtle ways in which this tendency creeps into our creative process. It's the hesitancy to be led by the spirit, to step out of oneās comfort zone, itās the fear of criticism, the constant comparison with others' success, the pursuit of pleasing the algorithm. The canvas, once a playground of limitless imagination, becomes a confined space governed by external expectations.
The liberating truth lies in refocusing our gaze. Instead of seeking the approval of others, we are called to seek first the kingdom of God. In the divine act of creation, we find a higher purposeāone that transcends the fleeting applause of the world. Our art becomes a sacred offering, a form of worship where the Creator is honored above the created.
Breaking free from the chains of people-pleasing involves a shift from seeking validation to embracing vulnerability. It means acknowledging that not every stroke of the brush or note played will resonate with everyone, and that's okay. The goal is not unanimous applause but a sincere connection between the artist, their Creator, and those whose hearts are touched by the work.
As we unbecome people-pleasers, let's reclaim the joy of creation. The canvas is not a stage; it's a sanctuary where the whispers of God can be heard. Seek His guidance, immerse your work in prayer, and allow your art to be a reflection of the divine creativity within you.
In this liberation, the creative spirit soars beyond the confines of external expectations. It becomes a co-creator with God, bringing forth beauty that transcends the applause of the world. Remember, the true masterpiece is not always the one celebrated by the masses but the one that authentically reflects the artist's communion with God.
š PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, we surrender our creative pursuits to You. Forgive us when the desire for human approval overshadows our desire to honor You. Teach us to seek first Your kingdom, finding fulfillment in being vessels of Your creativity. Break the chains of people-pleasing, and may our art be a genuine expression of our connection with You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
