BOOST #135: Are You Running From Your Calling? 🏃♂️
What Jonah’s hesitation teaches creatives.
💖 DEVOTONAL:
“But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.” — Jonah 1:3 (ESV)
I’ve always found Jonah’s story a little too familiar. Not because I’ve ever been swallowed by a giant fish, but because I know what it’s like to hesitate when God asks me to do something. Jonah was called to speak to Nineveh. He ran the other way. And if I’m honest, there are moments I’ve felt the same tug-of-war inside me.
As creatives, we are prophets in our own way. Not prophets in the sense of predicting the future, but prophets in the sense of carrying messages, pointing people toward God, and speaking truth into culture. Every post, every piece of writing, every painting, design, or song that carries His heart is like a tiny prophetic act. And just like Jonah, sometimes the weight of that call can feel heavy enough to make us stall, retreat, or distract ourselves with anything but obedience.
But remember… the story of Jonah isn’t a celebration of hesitation. The point isn’t how long he ran, or how far he went in the wrong direction. The point is that God’s call still stood. His mercy still pursued. His purposes still unfolded. Jonah’s resistance didn’t cancel God’s assignment. It just delayed Jonah’s joy in living it out.
I think about all the times I’ve second-guessed, procrastinated, or downplayed what God asked me to create. And yet, even in my hesitation, God’s voice didn’t vanish. His Spirit kept nudging me back. The calling was still there, waiting. That’s the mercy of God! Not just in forgiving our failures, but in continuing to entrust us with His work.
Maybe you feel that same resistance right now. You sense God inviting you to step into something bigger: write the book, start the project, speak the truth… and you’ve been hesitant. Let Jonah remind you: God doesn’t give up on His messengers. He delights in working through us, even after our detours.
🙏 PRAYER:
Father, thank You for entrusting me with the gift of creativity and the call to reflect Your heart. Forgive me for the times I’ve hesitated or run from what You’ve asked me to do. Give me courage to obey quickly, to trust Your leading, and to see my work as part of Your message to the world. Help me glorify You not through delay, but through faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
💡 TIP OF THE WEEK:
Write down one creative project you’ve been putting off because of hesitation or fear. This week, take a single concrete step toward finishing it: outline the idea, sketch the first draft, record the intro. Don’t wait for perfect clarity. Obedience often begins with one small step forward.
