BOOST #144: Your Feed Is Too Small 📲
Why your doomscrolling might be stunting your creativity.
💖 DEVOTONAL:
“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.” — Psalm 24:1 (NIV)
Our four-year-old daughter never fails to amaze me. As young as she is, she loves drawing multi-page comics with dialogue, making her own activity sheets (and asking us to answer them), and even writing her own songs. Sure, her spelling could use some work (“vieyekels,” “thoght,” and “contineuation” are personal favorites) but her imagination never seems to run out. Today she proudly showed us a handmade storybook with three stories about mermaids, complete with a table of contents. I couldn’t help but smile.
Then I thought about myself at that age. I’m fairly certain I was just learning how to color inside the lines. The difference, I realized, isn’t that she’s naturally more gifted… it’s that she’s been surrounded by stories, music, books, and art from the beginning. By God’s grace, our home has become a place where creativity is part of everyday life. We simply try to make room for it, and it’s been beautiful to watch how she grows when her imagination is nurtured.
As creatives, that same principle applies to us. The things we immerse ourselves in shape what we’re capable of producing. Psalm 19:1 says that “the heavens declare the glory of God.” That means creation itself is constantly communicating the beauty, order, and brilliance of its Maker. It’s God’s art on full display, a world-sized gallery declaring His creativity. If that’s the world we live in, then our task as creatives is to notice it. To tune our eyes and hearts to the handiwork of God all around us.
If the only place we draw inspiration from is our Instagram feed, it’s no wonder our ideas start to feel repetitive and shallow. Creativity needs wide horizons. It thrives on curiosity, conversation, nature, Scripture, silence, and surprise.
God has filled His world with endless sources of inspiration, yet we often confine ourselves to glowing rectangles. The next great idea for your project might not come from another post or reel. It might come from a quiet walk, a conversation with a friend, or a moment spent watching light dance through the trees. Sometimes the most “productive” thing you can do for your creativity is to step away from your screen and pay attention to the world God made.
So, take a cue from a four-year-old. Surround yourself with good ideas, rich stories, and beauty that makes you pause. God’s glory is woven through every corner of creation. The more you take it in, the more your work will reflect His wonder.
🙏 PRAYER:
Father, thank You for filling the world with beauty and inspiration. Help me slow down enough to see it. Teach me to fill my mind and heart with what is true, good, and lovely. Guard me from becoming creatively numb, and guide me to draw from Your creation as my source of wonder. May everything I make reflect the richness of Your world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
💡 TIP OF THE WEEK:
Spend one day this week intentionally off social media. Read a short story, visit a local park, listen to music you’ve never heard before, or sketch what you see around you. Jot down one insight or idea that comes from that experience and see how it might inspire your next (or future) creative project.
