BOOST #146: Rest is Not a Reward 🥱
Learning to Stop Without Guilt
💖 DEVOTONAL:
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.” — Psalm 127:2 (NIV)
Culture taught us to treat rest like it’s a prize you earn after doing enough. Like sleep is a trophy. A break is a bonus. Sabbath is something you squeeze in if you’ve been productive enough. That mindset shaped me for years without me realizing it. I thought rest was something I needed to justify.
But the more I look at Scripture, the more I see that rest isn’t something God hands out at the end of a long week. I’ve come to learn that it’s actually something He wove into the rhythm of life from the very beginning. Even before sin entered the picture, God stopped. He paused to delight in what He made. Surely, that was wisdom and not a sign of weakness.
Somewhere along the way, between finishing projects and juggling expectations, I forgot that. Maybe you have too. I found myself resting with guilt, pausing but feeling like I should be doing something else, sitting down while my mind kept sprinting. My body would stop, but my soul wouldn’t. And slowly, that kind of living wears you down from the inside.
What I’ve been learning is simple, but it’s been changing me. Rest shapes you in ways hustle never will. It slows the heart enough for gratitude to rise again. It creates space for God to remind you who you are, not for what you can produce, but for who you belong to. Rest makes room for joy, clarity, and healing that don’t arrive any other way.
You and I were never meant to live like machines. We were never meant to be defined by output. We were meant to live loved, and part of being loved is learning to stop. Not to earn anything, but to receive what God has already given. Rest is a gift, not a finish line. And sometimes the holiest thing you can do is put everything down and breathe again.
🙏 PRAYER:
Father, thank You for creating me with limits and for inviting me to rest without guilt. Teach my heart to slow down long enough to notice Your presence. Help me release the pressure to earn what You freely give. Restore my joy, my strength, and my sense of wonder as I learn to rest the way You designed me to. Amen.
💡 TIP OF THE WEEK:
Choose one pocket of your week and protect it as sacred rest. Not productive rest. Not multitasking rest. Just a few slow, quiet minutes to breathe, pray, or sit in stillness. Pay attention to what rises in your heart when you finally stop.
